I'll be honest, I think the game was at it's best around 2009 or 2010, about when they dropped all support for it. I swear the game was better off with no devs than when we started getting devs again. That was just after the Shadow Hilsbury and the final MH chapter was added.

I am of the same opinion Jak, I had some of my best memories during that time, not only with Reverence but just playing in general, I would love to get that feeling back (only with support) on the emulator.

I am guilty as charged. I did not stay all the way until the end and the last few years only played at Vanguard. I think the title of my thread is misleading, but it was auto-named from a clicky I followed from a different post. A more appropriate name would be "Reasons I got fed up with Vanguard and quit: Please fix where applicable".
When I started phasing out there was a hault on any more character "balancing" because it seemed to inflame people as it really only seemed to further imbalance classes. i think the sentiment at the time was they nerfed rangers and necros, souped up sorcs (as if they needed it) and forgot classes like warriors and rogues who needed some attention. The beginning of my loss of interest came when AAs were taken off the table. The real end came when Secret World was released- that was a very long awaited fingers and toes crossed moment for me. Sometimes I get the urge to get my fantasy elf world fix though and Vanguard has always been my favorite simply because of the atmosphere and depth. I also had a great appreciation that certain areas of the game required that you need a group in order to get to them. They also had a nice amount of solo content but if I wanted a game I could solo all the way through I would play a single player on my computer.

Hear hear, I can appreciate that. I think I was one of the few who actually dreaded when SoE fixed its baleful eye on Vanguard after so long, you knew something bad was about to happen.

I would take it back to before the 55 increase personally, but that's me, I do like the additions we got (Pantheon, Magi Hold Etc) but those extra 5 levels just threw so much out of whack for me, balancing, gear etc. I need a best of both worlds thing to happen, that would be great.

I agree the extra five levels messed things up. I did like getting more content. I think that content could have just been made top level. Or they could have made it top level and need some AAs to do it and put the AA system in game. (Unless that was also going to end up being game breaking.) Then they could have put something in Like Age of Conan where new encounters in the new expansion required specific gear sets. Maybe add in a new zone where a quest line grants you knowledge of a new line of weapons armor etc and go from there. No imbalance. Gives crafters something to do. What really happened was: lets raise 5 levels of adventure and shoot years of diplo and craft grinds in the ass by making them nearly obsolete. Such is the brains at SOE.

And how, Comes full circle....AA's, god how I wished they had implemented them, Horizontal progression would have been best for Vanguard. What gets me is that based on what they said initially is that AA's were for all intents and purposes pretty much done. Then scrapped to shoe horn VG into a vertical grind game. But really towards the end SoE was just sorta giving everyone the finger IMO, spec crafters. So many dungeons left unitemized, quest lines orphaned etc. They coulda just concentrated on that and been able to pump out content to accommodate end game easily without the need for time sink grind just for the sake of it.

I think that everything put into the game after APW and before MH was designed to be a grind with a single-minded purpose of keeping people off the forums and change the trending topics to something other than "we want more content".

I totally agree that VG is better suited to horizontal progression. Horizontal progression could've easily been achieved in such a large world without destroying the original PotA, Makalia, etc. Blah.

AAs would have been a great addition, and can be done without trivializing old content. Add specialized AAs that are required specifically for new content, but aren't a factor in old content (specific resists, specialized skills, attacks, counterattacks, etc). Spread gear upgrades across all new content. One upgrade piece, per quest line, per area - kinda like the Razad helm.

I could go on for days.

Agreed, specially about the specific AA paths for specific content, I think they touched briefly on this when they did MH, with the Ulvari spells, and crystals, although not AA's per say, it followed that vein of thought. this could easily expanded to cover other areas etc. And the idea of a piece of gear per spot sounds good as well. The Only drawback I can think of would be getting help on a specific piece if the majority of players have moved on to another area for the next piece. (but I think that's more symptomatic of MMO/Gear/Progression than anything, and hits every game) Drives me mad thinking of all the potential this game had/has that was never capitalized.
