Greatweapon Melee Character

I am looking to start a character who uses a 2 handed weapon to fight. I do not intend to raid as my schedule does not allow for it but I would like to group at some point. According to the official site all Protective fighters can use a 2handed weapon but I heard there are changes to design that would make some combinations less viable. I don't mind not being perfect but I also don't want to be turned away from groups for a poor choice I made 54 levels ago. I am committed to the concept of a fighter who uses a 2 hander. I played a DK at launch but wasn't thrilled with it. Can Paladin or Warrior function as a 2h build? I Tank in most MMOs I have played but am ok with a Viable Tank or DPS build. If there is another class I should be looking at I am also open to that.

I know you guys probably get pestered by people who don't search the forums but I seriously checked here and some other sites and did not find what I was looking for.

    Thanks for your help.

DK's are the 2 handed tank class. If you use a 2 hander as the other classes you are going to lose out on a lot of their abilities as they are catered to sword and board (pally) and Dual Wield (warrior)

Paladins essentially must use a shield. Warriors excel with two weapons. Perhaps try another DK and see if it has changed since you last played.

Thanks for the information. The website reads like weapon groups are more suggestions but it seems the classes are locked in their choice.
    DK it is then.

DKs also tank with a 2 hander, I think? It's a slow-ish class till about 18-20, then it gets better :)

Of all the character classes I have tried, I think the heavy fighters are the toughest to play. Certainly everyone has a preferred class and maybe my style doesn't mesh well with them but I must tell you they are tough. Anyone who can make a go of the warrior, dk, or paladin gets a salute from me.

I think more so than any other classes, tanks ramp up in power as they level. It's true for all classes of course, but it's especially true for tanks, and it happens later. Most of the tanks don't really hit their stride until well into the 30s. Warriors don't even get Cleave until level 40, and it's a core class hate ability. This is the main reason why tanks seem harder early on. the other classes in general gain their power much more quickly, and the tanks work more into theirs. At high level tanks can do some pretty impressive things though.

As for the original question, all the tanks can use all the weapon types, it's just not really worth it in almost all cases. paladins get a 2-hander epic later on, but that's really the only notable exception to the rule.

i've seen some warriors and pally's macro a two-hander for crit chain attacks, and even known a pally or two to use a two hander when dpsing... but you need to use the specific weapons for most attacks.

The two-hander is the bread-and-butter weapon for the DK. In fact, the DK is the only class specifically designed to use the weapon. All other classes that use it do so with penalties attached. DKs have no penalties for use, (and do have penalties for using other weapons) as it was the weapon they were designed around.

DKs get the most out of 2h weapons. However I sometimes use 2hander on my warrior when I'm NOT tanking. With bard in group and my short buffs and self buffs it is fun to hit things for up to 20-25k

you probably will get more mileage out of using a 2h for your finishers as a warrior for a long time. but you really do need some abilities that are only available to you when you dual wield whether youre tanking or not. just make a macro or go through vginterface and get something that will help you switch your gear quickly

Although it may not be what you are thinking off, disciples and monks also can use twohanded weapons (bladestaff, martial sword, martial staff), as well as shamans and clerics (great hammer/maul).
