Re: Let the countdown begin!
I am not happy with SOE for making promises they can't or won't keep. But at the same time I can't fault them entirely for what has happened to VG. I still think the final nail in the coffin for VG was the release of COW. They had hoped releasing this dungeon would draw in more players and generate more revenue. Instead it broke soo many things that it just pissed off more people. Rather than spend the money to try and fix it, they just said to hell with it.
I believe they are telling the truth when they say VG has not made them any money but rather ran at a loss for years. As shitty as it is, SOE is a business and above all else they are in business to make money. So if you have a product that is causing you to hemorage money and you can't fix it, at some point you have to cut ties.
SOE was not the original creator of VG, their guys did not write the original code. I have heard too many sotried of just how hashed up the code is for VG and its amazing it runs at all.
I believe SOE bought VG for 2 reasons. 1. they lost a lot of people from EQ as EQ changed over the years and became watered down. VG had a lot of former EQ vets following it and SOE wanted to get those customers back. 2. It was a favor Smed was doing for Brad to help somehow keep his game going.
Truth is though, the only way VG could have ever hope to have a real chance at thriving, it would need to be taken over by folks who want to fix it and run it out of pure pasion for the game, not people who are looking to make money on it. So hopfully now that the future of VG will be in the hands of the EMU community, it will get the attention it needs. But since as you guys mentioned you cant do anything with the client, I really dont know how much fixing and later on adding on to the game will be possible.
PS. Yes I know SOE did next to nothing to advertise the game which didnt help, but I also cant help but feel the reason for that was they were worried about advertising it, then having customers come, see how buggy and unplayable it was in the beginning and then quit and think ALL SOE games were bad.

Agree, been saying this since the announcement. As much as I dislike it, I do understand business. And shareholders

After spending 8 mos on this end of the project, I wholeheartedly agree.
But, we're going to make it work.

^ And this is exactly the attitdue and determination that SOE should have put into VG when they bought it. If they did, who know where VG would have gone.

Re: Let the countdown begin!
Sitting here watching the countdown timer tick to an almost even 2 days My palms are sweating, seeing the last few posts about what we don't have.
But rest assured, we have so much data thanks to our collectors, anything that is missing can be built based on the stuff we do, and resources around the web.
I'm not scared. At least, not until tomorrow at 6pm PDT, when days reads 00 23 59 59

John - I think you and the veteran team here deserve a huge thank you for taking the initiative to do this. Too few people care, and it won't be until years later when they're crying they are playing MMO's they seemingly hate that people will remember the quirks that Vanguard had fondly. I'm looking forward to taking this journey with everyone here, and I want you to know how much we appreciate what it is you all have started here.
Whatever happens tomorrow - we did everything we could.

Word. Im sad yet relieved the server shutsdown tommorow morning.
Id wish id had 2 more weeks for the crafting sphere to capture every recipe, but on the other hand I need a break ;D . Im sure i'll get atleast some more funiture and unique consumables like runes etc..
It will be exciting to create a new maybe even better game in the years to come
See you in Khal . I'll be there fishing on elquars sloop

Re: Let the countdown begin!
Fallout, you are literally a super-hero here, for your efforts in collecting and tracking progress. Everyone did a great job, but you sir definitely deserve a vacation I hope you enjoy the final day of Live a little bit to yourself, and moreso hope your expertise in crafting are still with us for years to come. We're going to need it.
Re: Let the countdown begin!
Wish I had found out about this effort sooner. Much sooner. Seriously didn't know about it less than a week ago.

Hey Weasel,
Still lots and lots of work to do! Even after sunset, things need to be reconstructed. Knowledge just in your head will be key!

No sense not having fun in the final moments.
