Looks like DaybreakGames (Formerly (SOE) as entered into a “written agreement” with Project 1999.

I was just about to post that myself, it is very good news, pity we can't make a similar agreement and get code/files for VG to help build it again.

Will they do this for Vanguard? And would that make it any easier/faster? Wonder if that restricts the team at all.

Here is the main issue with Vanguard compared to EQ. EQ was done by soe with it's own engine Unlike vanguard which was done by sigil -> Microsoft -> soe and using the unreal engine. With all the license involved the only way i can see it ever coming back in original form is if daybreak brings it back or someone purchases it from soe.

Really the best we could hope for is someone leaking the code.

Maybe it's worth it to reach out and gently ask for the database again.

I dunno, perhaps the only thing that may be stopping VGO from making such an arrangement is not actually reaching out to Daybreak to ask?

VG is IP owned by Daybreak, so its not like there are 3rd parties to deal with like with a licensed IP (like in the case of games like SWG, Matrix Online, et, Warhammer Online, etc.)

One of those things where ya never know unless you ask, and it seem Daybreak is receptive, I mean EQ is still a live, published game, and they are legitimizing P99..and I am sure its not simply because Smed thought it would be nice, you can bet P99 principals reached out and asked. (and you can bet Daybreak knows about this project, and the other efforts emulating its games).

Its also quite possible that because Daybreak is out from under Sony now, they have more freedom to make these decisions, where before they had to answer to Sony legal.

Now there is no chance in hell for VGO to be open sourced (given all the licensed tech used to make it, BUT simply having a formal agreement that legitimizes an emulation effort is pure gold, and this is quite precedent setting given that Daybreak is even willing to do this.

UDK4 licenses are now free unless you make money, and even then you don't pay until you've made $3k. I wonder if something can be worked out with Epic in that regard? I actually have some friends that work at Epic (Cary, NC campus), but they're fairly low on the totem pole so I don't know if they can help direct, but they might know who to talk to in regards to this.

Mostly I'd just like a nod from Daybreak that would let us have our game back without fear of a shutdown notice. Or, well, if they could give us whatever is needed so we can alter the stuff on the clients.

But I think it's true, someone should reach out. They might be more receptive.
