I am not happy with SOE for making promises they can't or won't keep. But at the same time I can't fault them entirely for what has happened to VG. I still think the final nail in the coffin for VG was the release of COW. They had hoped releasing this dungeon would draw in more players and generate more revenue. Instead it broke soo many things that it just pissed off more people. Rather than spend the money to try and fix it, they just said to hell with it.
I believe they are telling the truth when they say VG has not made them any money but rather ran at a loss for years. As shitty as it is, SOE is a business and above all else they are in business to make money. So if you have a product that is causing you to hemorage money and you can't fix it, at some point you have to cut ties.
SOE was not the original creator of VG, their guys did not write the original code. I have heard too many sotried of just how hashed up the code is for VG and its amazing it runs at all.
I believe SOE bought VG for 2 reasons. 1. they lost a lot of people from EQ as EQ changed over the years and became watered down. VG had a lot of former EQ vets following it and SOE wanted to get those customers back. 2. It was a favor Smed was doing for Brad to help somehow keep his game going.
Truth is though, the only way VG could have ever hope to have a real chance at thriving, it would need to be taken over by folks who want to fix it and run it out of pure pasion for the game, not people who are looking to make money on it. So hopfully now that the future of VG will be in the hands of the EMU community, it will get the attention it needs. But since as you guys mentioned you cant do anything with the client, I really dont know how much fixing and later on adding on to the game will be possible.
PS. Yes I know SOE did next to nothing to advertise the game which didnt help, but I also cant help but feel the reason for that was they were worried about advertising it, then having customers come, see how buggy and unplayable it was in the beginning and then quit and think ALL SOE games were bad.
