Client Availability

So, when VG announced its sunset I uninstalled my client. At that point it was too painful to actually open the game up and go into it, or even look at the icon.

I didn't know about this project back then, and now that the sunset has happened it brings me to a tough spot; while the setup is available (and I do have a boxed copy) the servers are unavailable to patch up to current.

If we want more than just the people who played the game up to the final days to actually be able to take part in the emulator once it's live we're going to need to have a way to make the client available, and do so without incurring the wrath of SOE.

Torrent files on the DHT network would likely be the safest (and most difficult to get it taken down) we'd just need folks to seed it.

This issue is being discussed at the moment between the team as a lot of people will be in the same boat as you and some not even have the launcher at all, John was trying to get hold of SOE CM, Legal Reps and Smed to see if they would let him release it "as is" to everyone here but no word yet as far as I'm aware.

Other options were to torrent it like you suggested or John personally host it but again, he could get in huge legal trouble, so waiting to see if he can get a reply from someone at SOE and if not, I would assume that torrenting the client would be the best option.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that SOE is willing to play ball on this one. But considering their responses regarding the server software, I have a feeling it won't be likely.

It being hosted here without the blessing of SOE wouldn't be wise though. At least with torrenting the Emulator team can claim to have no part in it.

Shockingly enough, Vanguard compresses amazingly well. I saved off a copy of the final client and it compressed down to <5gigs from almost 20, more than enough to get it plus all of my screenshots and UI assets on a single DVD-DL.

As a worst case scenario, Torrenting it should not be too stressful for people. Sadly however, I can’t host it, as my ISP has a ridiculous bandwidth limit that I’m already bumping up against without uploads gigs of data a day.

Yup, I will have no part of sourcing the SOE client, but I am hopeful others find their own solution. Someone mentioned something like Mega Upload or whatever. File Sharing seems to be the easiest, where end-users are concerned. Torrent scares the crap out of most people (including me) though I am a huge Usenet leech.
