Random game breaking lag spikes.

Hello.
First off thank you all responsible for bringing back this masterpiece MMORPG, I just recently discovered this project.
And thank you all for setting the game up with extra commands to allow us to have many great features for testing etc.

The one issue I notice on a fairly regular basis despite having a strong PC/internet, is massive random lag spikes. Im not talking normal lag, im talking negative 4000 ms to over negative 19K ms pings, at random. This is game breaking lag where you cant do much of anything for the duration. It seems to happen every other day or so for me, but I also might get lucky and go a day or so without the lag spikes. Today I lagged out so bad it literally kicked two of my accounts from game. After a while I was able to log back in, and it seems normal for now.

I was just wondering what the issue is on these massive lag spikes? I hate to see such a fantastic project ruined by this level of lag. And I will tell you now most people wont want to support a projects if these spikes are part of the deal, it must be top priority. Once the lag issue is stable, I think there are a decent group of people like me who would pay the typical MMORPG monthly fee around 14.99/month for this project.

I'm sorry to hear about your lag issues, however no one else has reported any issues like you're describing.

We did have the server crash earlier today (around 10:30am Eastern) and was down for a little over an hour. Other than that though, it's been a while since an unexpected downtime.

We tend to have players on every day, and content designers are on working on quests and NPCs. Recently we had an influx of people due to a streamer and I believe was our highest active player count. Server seemed to run fine and no one complained of lag that I'm aware of.

As you're the only one with this issue, I don't think there's anything we can do. It'd have to be something specific between the server and your location, or your computer if it's having problems running VG. Reinstalling the client would be my first suggestion, with a fresh download from our links: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4481

And for the money thing, we have no plans to charge for access. Once we have the server code ready, it'll be released open source for anyone to run their own server if they want.

Im definitely not the only one with this issue, as when it happens others complain about it in chat, its evidently server wide.
As I stated, I have a strong PC/internet so its not on my end, I run many other games flawlessly on both aspects.

Its really strange, everything is great then all of the sudden...its like the server just lags horribly. I have mainly noticed it on Isle of Dawn if that has anything to do with it.

It reminds me a long time ago when I would be online hosting a FPS game for myself and a few other players. My brother in the other room would sometimes open a browser on his computer when I was hosting, then all of the sudden all the players in my game would instantly lag out with 600 plus pings haha. We were using a hub at the time which did not regulate bandwidth between PCs at all.

I will also add its nice of you guys to not want any money, I was debating on paying you monthly fees just like any other MMORPG to help support the project, since most all MMORPGs today are not as good as VG SoH. And releasing everything to the public so people can host their own game of VG, wow nice!

I haven't experienced any lag spikes myself but I haven't been on since this weekend (as I normally don't get time to work on it until the weekends). I do know that we're experiencing higher than normal useage because of the Nathan Napalm stream. We normally don't get more than 10-15 players on at a time. So I don't know if the load is hurting things.

But I do want to point out that we are still in the middle of rebuilding the game. And if you are on when a content designer is on, those lag spikes might actually be the designer reloading scripts. Next time you experience them, see if someone with the GM or Dev tag is on, or check your chat to see if there was a broadcast about scripts being reloaded.

We can't afford to run a production and a live server (especially when we don't really have that many players on, and I expect the existing population surge to die down within a month or so), so players have to get used to having some interruption when a designer is actively rebuilding the game.

Next time you see this happening can you post what time it was when you experienced this?

Its ok my friend you guys are doing something VERY special bringing this fantastic game back to life, I cant state that enough. I wish I was rich instead of poor I would hire you an entire staff to help with this project. As far as the lag, after the initial spikes earlier, everything is running like a champ. Ive been logged onto my alt accounts, just killed my first 6 dot, a lvl 53 wandering fungal lord, alts FTW.

Also sorry if this is a bit off topic, but how can we disable experience? Ive read there is a way to do it but no actual instructions how.

THANK YOU again for bringing VG SoH back to life!!

There was an ability on Live that allowed you to turn off XP gain. We don't currently have that implemented yet. You can always set your own level though so if you ding, you can set it back to what it was before.

The command for that is: /say .setlevel 0 Level#Here (That is specifically for adventuring)

Thanks, Ive used a lot of your commands have several 50s and testing many things out :)
But for a few lowbies in specific areas I thought it would be fun to lock them at a certain level for helper characters hehe, its no big deal and thank you for the fast replies and the return of one of the greatest MMORPGs ever made!
