So thoughts on a totally private LAN server?

Forgive me if it's been asked before but I was wondering where or when we will be able to use a repack that contains both the login and world servers offline on LAN only to launch and access the game. It's been done with with the eq2emu, and I understand the progress made on VG thus far isn't too far in, there's a lot to go. So that's why I was wondering when something like that would be released. Since obviously right now it isn't possible.

I'd love to be able to play around with and have my very own login and world server database totally offline on my LAN only.

Whats the draw to something like that out of curiosity? Only thing I can think of is to goof off and fuck with stuff in a safe environment without disrupting other people.

That.

And also being able to keep a working copy of the game in the event that SOE, oh im sorry "DBG" (Douche Bag Games) decides to come in and banhammer this entire project.

Daybreak Games apparently support emulators, they officially recognized the p99 project for it's work (I think that's what it's called). We hope they give us similar support (or at the very least, ignore us).

Hell, I'd be perfectly happy if they reinstated VG after the devs here fix all the issues they can fix, where SOE didn't think it was worthwhile (I know, it won't happen, I'm just sayin'.)

The biggest kick in the teeth (IMO) was where they used the "doing an injustice to the community by letting Vanguard continue to run with broken content and bugs" the reason for shutting down the game.

Like shutting the game down and dividing a community is a much better solution.

I'd rather have had them tell us they shut it down for the real reason they did; money.

I am much happier knowing any subscription I paid when it was pay2play wasn't used at all for the games future, and I am happier knowing the money saved shutting it down will be used to pay the excess electric bills for lights accidentally left on in a closet somewhere in their buildinng.

Sigh....

Actually SOE has a great track record with letting games just run instead of just killing them outright.

If they truly were so money / time motivated, Vanguard would of been terminated much earlier than last year IMHO. If that were the case I would not have been able to play it, experience it and help with this project.

Well, the truth is, they did something to the game that broke it. And they tried several times to fix it, and it just didn't work. I feel like if VG continued to run as smoothly as it did between 2009-2010, that they could probably just let it run on auto-pilot. But the game was so buggy that they needed GMs there to constantly answer petitions.

Despite all the negativity about SOE/Daybreak, I really do feel like they made an effort to fix a broken game, but in the end, they realized it would probably need a rewrite across the board, and the game's reputation and money generation wasn't enough to make it worthwhile.

I also think if it weren't for legal issues and such, that they probably would have just let the community try to fix it. But because of copyright/IP laws and the red tape that big gaming companies find themselves in, that they couldn't do that. They also couldn't just hand over people's info/data either.

I feel like this is why Daybreak (unlike SOE) supports emulators.
