Train to Zone!

Players, we need some input here. We're pretty sure there was no "training" mobs on others in VG, but need to make sure.

Combat testing discussion
How do we feel about trains, as in letting aggro npcs build hate to anyone they pass by, even when in combat or chasing another player? Should we consider a server rule? I don't believe it occurred in Vanguard.

Also, on the way back to its origin location, it should be tagged as non-attackable, correct?
Agreed, I don't think VG had "train to zone". From my own (recent) memory just before sunset, I recall leashed mobs scampering back to their spot very quickly and instantly regened all their stats. Ie., it was not running back 1/2 health so someone else can pick it off. I like the idea of a Rule for how this is handled; someone might want to make their world more interesting than VG Live... but it's not super critical imo.

I'd like to hear from the regular raiders though, if "training" mobs onto contesting parties was a strat (albeit an evil, dirty strat) we might need to consider it.

Thanks

You could do it, yes. It depends on the mob and the situation, but you could train mobs into another group. I know sometimes if you leashed them, they would return home no matter what.

But ... ... okay one time my group was in Trengal Keep and we were working our way towards that named spider, right? right. Well these assholes behind our group waited for us to clear to it and then while we were killing the last mob in the way, they ran up to the spider and took it. "Well," we thought, "That's just one of those things that happens in this game." And we were going to let it go. Except those assholes came up to us, dropped a fucking Slappy to make us dance, and went about their way doing the TK quests.

I was fucking enraged. So I had the two tanks in the group round as many mobs as they could. And we ran as many mobs over to them as we could and then we evac'd out (I was the druid with the evac.). So we waited at the altar and a few seconds later they popped. I dropped a slappy and made them dance.

Fuckers.

So yes, you can do it. You can train mobs into raids, depending on where it is. We've had that happen to us. You can train mobs into outposts. I think as long as the mob isn't leashing, it'll go after someone else - especially if they AOE or something to pull aggro off the one that originally got the attention.

I believe Jakkal is correct. It took some work to train, but it could be done, sometimes.

As to whether we should have training, my answer is a resounding NO! IMO, one of the reasons the player base in Vanguard was so good (and it was the best) was that Vanguard discouraged bad behavior (e. g. training, kill stealing, ninja looting) and that tended to weed out the assholes. Sure, it was possible to be a jerk in Vanguard (q.v. Jakkal's post), but it took more work and the opportunities were fewer than in EQ. In all the years I played Vanguard I had fewer issues with bad player behavior than I had in any given week in EQ.

Excellent story, Jak. I don't think I have ever heard you drop an F-bomb before either, well done! Watching them pop at the altar gave me the giggles.

I had forgot about that one condition, so we'll make sure Zippy is aware; if the mob is still hating on everyone and NOT already in run-back mode, it can be picked off by someone else.

Here's another (fading) memory, speaking of that. Say I'm fighting something and it kills me. I'm laying there dead. Did mobs "camp" my corpse for a while, or did they generally race back to reset soon as they were victorious? Again, I can't keep EQ, EQ2 and VG separate. One of them had corpse-camping NPCs, and I thought it was both hilarious and frustrating at times

I remember someone post about this in the forums. Yes some mobs would camp you , can't remember if it was just specific zones or in all of them.

Another thing is that if you're trying to establish ownership on a mob, I think you had to take it to 85% health before you 'owned it'. Once you owned it, the health bar would turn grey to everyone else. They could still hit it as long as it wasn't a group locked mob (like raid mobs) but they wouldn't get XP or any kind of kill credit for it if it was grey to them.

The problem with this is if you're playing a very low DPS class like a cleric, and you start beating on a mob (Say it's a named mob) and you don't establish ownership, a sorc can come up, slam it and take it from you.

You can proximity aggro a mob and run it to another player, and if they hit it, they'll almost always pull that mob off the runner.

Yes Jakkal, i remember some challenges with some other groups to kill Hegnarian (near the Lair of Mnalus), the group which taken the ownership won the right to continue the event ^^

That was a great part of the gameplay

Yes, training mobs was possible, at least in early parts of Vanguard. It's actually where I learned the term (Vanguard was my first MMO). I remember - I was in River Valley exploring, and I took the "elevator" on the top of one of those white platforms. There were dragons up there, much higher level than I was, and I ended up running around trying to shake them but still trying not to fall off the platforms. I ran through a group questing up there or doing something. I received a PM saying "Thanks for training us, a$$hole!" after apparently killing off their group.. I apologized profusely, and it actually ended up being a situation in which I became their friends and eventually joining their guild.

Not advocating either side of things, but just wanted to share the story.

That would be incorrect. It could be attacked, and re-pulled, while running back. Also... it would not reset energy and health immediately, so you could sometimes run back in after it to finish it off when leashing.
