Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
I had not actively played VG in almost 6 years before starting this project (for real in 2013). For me, I lost a lot of gray matter on the game by just not playing it after it's maturity.
One area I am suffering in knowledge are some of the "terms" you guys use when describing your game. Can you use this post as a glossary of sorts, to tell me what you mean by:
One area I am suffering in knowledge are some of the "terms" you guys use when describing your game. Can you use this post as a glossary of sorts, to tell me what you mean by:
- Quest Hubs - what is a quest hub? I know what a quest Line is. I know what a Hub is, but how does this pertain to questing in VG?
Tiers - You guys also define levels of encounter/gear in "Tiers" (T1, T2, T3). Can you give me some examples of each? What qualifies a Tier and it's content?
The Flow - Anything else you can think of that relates to this game's content, how you would "define" it or an area or a conquest.
Acronyms for the different areas would also be helpful (SoD, CoW, PotA I kinda get heh) damn gamers and their acronyms........
Anyone have any Links to walkthru's of their favorite quest lines? Like that Griffon quest (I never got one, never even started it in fact). I'd like to get an idea of how vast some of these epic quest lines are.[/list:u]
Fill me up with your knowledge. Now's the time to brain dump, please. and thank you in advance.
Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
Quest Hubs: Usually these are outposts scattered around with one or two questgivers. Off the top of my head some good quest hub locations were the outpost in Beranid Hills, Trengal's Outpost, And that one just to the west of RI and another next to Tricksters. Sorry I can't really remember the names of those locations, we didn't often refer to them by name in the game.
Tiers: Some of the gear in game had very specific tier rewards as in, first you get this set, and then you could upgrade it. An Example was Celestine ward, and POTA (Pantheon of the Ancients). POTA gear specifically had 3 tiers. You start earning T1 gear. Then as you move on, your T1 gear turns into T2 gear. Then as you move on, your T2 gear becomes T3 gear.
Tier could also mean crafting materials or crafted items, as T1 crafted is the first few levels, say 1-10 gear (example: Copper Armor), then T2 would be 11-20 gear (Tin Armor), etc. That went up to T6.
The Flow: There ... there really wasn't any real flow. There were so many directions people could take, there wasn't really any specific flow. Even people powerlevelling went different ways.
Acronyms, oh boy there's a bunch of them, but here's what I can recall off the top of my head: (Unsure of exact spelling for some of these)
TK: Trengal Keep
CW: Celestine Ward/Wardship of the Sleeping Moon
Thel: Thelaseen
RK: Renton Keep (Quest Hub)
NT: New Targonor
MH: Magi Hold
TG: Tawar Galan (Crafting/Diplo hub in Kojan)
SS: Shimmering Shallows
SOD: Shores of Darkness (The chunk that the KDQ riftway was in. Fun fact, people from Seradon called it SOD, while people from Xeth called it KDQ. So when the servers merged, there was some interesting conversations in OOC chat about the different server groups using the different acronyms)
KDQ: Kamelott Destruction Quota (The quests in SOD)
RI: Rahz Inkur
IOG: Isle(Island?) of Garuzamut
IOD: Isle of Dawn aka Newbie Island
CIS: Coterie Infinium Sanctuary
ZH: Zossyr Hakrel
TOD: Temple of Dailuk
3R: Three Rivers
NN: Nusibe Necropolis
KG: Ksaravi Gultch
LN: Leth Nurae
VE: Veskal's Exchange
LC: Lost Canyon
Itchy: Itchtakta
POA: Plains of Anguish
COW: Cave of Wonders (This is what killed the game we think, I mean, that SOE put money into making this zone and it failed utterly and broke stuff)
COB: City of Brass
POTA: Pantheon of the Ancients
Chickens: Zaseh and Ataraxis, guardians in POTA
Sisters: The final trial in POTA
Now the Griffon quest... let me tell you about the griffon quest I could probably write up the entire questline from memory, I did it so many times.
But for serious, we do have some game info on Unleashed's forums here: http://unleashedgaming.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=15 (You might have to sign up to see it)

Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
The griffon questline, this is as much as I remember (Yes I have kind of a crappy memory). But I used to run "Get Your Griffons" on the server for anyone that wants a griffon, we could get them through it. I swear I think I wrote this up before on the old forums, but I don't feel like looking for it, so I'll write it up again. Do you need the strats?
First Quest: Griffons of a Feather: Ch. 1 Initiation - You have to talk to a guy named Scout Pellillo Cogswin. He was a little gnome that stood outside of the house surrounded by all the griffons, up the road from Southwatch.
Objectives: He gives you a think that turns you into a shubbery with Monty Python overtones. You have to use this illusion to pluck feathers from baby gryphons, but don't let the matriarchs see you! They'll literally kick you out of the area. You have to do this five times and return to Pellillo.
Second Quest: Talk to Naziel. I don't remember what the next quest was called, but it was literally "Go to New Targonor and find Captain Naziel." He's hiding behind some buildings in the crappy part of town. If I had a map, I can show you exactly where.
Objectives: Talk to Naziel. He'll think you're some scummy punk and give you some quests he thinks you can't complete:
Third Quest: Naziel's Request
#1. You need to bring him some Torlaxis Saliva. You get this by killing mobs in the Palace of Rahz Inkur, and they have a chance of dropping Efreeti Blood (The orange drop, not the blue one). If you go to the great seal in the Palace and use the blood, a Hound will spawn. Torlaxis is the rare named spawn. So you have to collect a lot of bloods and hope Torlaxis spawns. Fun fact, at one point we found a spawn exploit where if you used two bloods at once, Torlaxis was forced to spawn, because (we assumed) the placeholder hound was already spawned. Used to work 100% of the time til they fixed it.
#2. You need to bring him a Fungal Sample from the Fungal Abomination. When you get this quest, Naziel will give you the sphere of collection (For god's sake, don't lose it). You take that sphere of collection and do the Hegnarian Run. You need to kill Hegnarian to turn that sphere of collection into a sphere of wind magic. Wait for fellow players to make fart jokes. During the Heg Run you need to kill King Mnal. In order to get him to spawn, you have to kill his son, the Prince, then then Queen will spawn, and you kill her and loot the blood. Then you have to use the blood on the normally benign king, and he'll turn red and become attackable. Kill him and loot the Stipe. When you have the Stipe and the Sphere of Wind Magic, you can click the stipe and it will turn into Magic Mushrooms. Wait for fellow players to make "trippin' balls" jokes. Take the Magic Mushrooms to a certain spot in the swamp, click it and get the Fungal Abomination to spawn. When he dies loot him for the sample. (Fun fact: This bugged out every now and then so the person that needed it couldn't loot it. And because they needed to go through the song and dance of the heg run, it takes their magic mushrooms. They can no longer get the sphere of collection or the stipe to redo it. So they had to GM petition to move on).
#3. He wants the beating heart of Pharoah Harka...what'shisname. In order to summon the Pharoah, you have to do the quest to assemble his body. I can't recall if you could simple not turn in that quest or what. But if you had the body on a character, you could just keep resummoning him forever. Go down to Nusibe Necropolis, summon the pharoah with whatever toon has the body, and kill him. You'll get the heart automatically. (Fun Fact: The person with the body doesn't need to be in the group that kills the pharoah for credit. I had this on my disciple and I would summon and FD so he wouldn't attack her. Also my rogue was awesome here cuz I often had to drag healer TS's down to the pharoah's room to summon people!)
Return to Naziels with all the crap. Gaze in amazement, Naziel, as the scummy punk managed to pass your stupid test. Naziel will teleport you into the building he's next to, and you'll find some people that are part of the Griffon Watch, and they totally need your help.
Fourth Quest: Memories of the Old Blood: The next quest is the Old Targonor Knights. There are six knights, you have to be in the kill group for each one. The fun part? They're random spawns. So you go to Old Targonor and just randomly kill all the crap until you see the message on your screen. Each Knight had their own message. If I had a map, I could show you exactly where they spawned (I might go looking for maps after this to show you quest stuff).
1.Tekar - The Emo Kid - His message was something like, "Despair, because despair despair despair!" Okay I don't remember it, but it was emo.
2. Shorul the Wee - Oh he makes me laugh! He's a teeny tiny skeleton dude. His message was a hissing voice questioning how much you're worth.
3. Naranda - the Slut - Seriously can knights not afford some real armor, cuz honey...
4. Raffen - The Vain - He was like a paladin or something.
5. Cennfar - Fat Kid - Easiest one to kill.
6. Akande - The Butcher - Once regarded as the most difficult mob in the game, and to me, he really was. He REALLY was. Until POTA came out, then he was easy. But the first time I killed him, it was like our 20th attempt and it was a RACE to get it done. His message was "Tempt my wrath and I shall grant it eagerly".
Congrats, you finished off the OT Knights! Take those rings to Cassius Bladesong in what is referred to as "griffon yard" in NT.
Fifth Quest: Investigation - Cassius is surprised by your ability to kill the OT knights. But now he has a job for you. Griffon chicks all over telon have some kind of issue. Go forth, and collect samples from all the known griffon nests around the world.
You have to go around ALL OVER THE PLACE and get samples from griffon chicks and check out the dead bodies of the Griffon Watch scouts that were trying to figure out the same thing. Then you have to kill the UMBRAL SYNDICATE AGENT that has all caps names for reason I can't figure out. Anyway, he can't just let you kill him, you have to play a dumb game of simon says with magic power that you gained from the griffon chicks.
Spoiler: He casts them in this order: Fire, Blinding, Posion, Fire, Frost, Lightning, Blinding, Fire, Frost, Lightning, Poison, Blinding
Return to Cassius. Cassius sends you off to another fellow that tells you that --
Sixth Quest: Down and Dirty. This is another multiple part quest, but you can actually pay your way through it (With in game money). They've found out there's something shady going on with gryphon races, so you need to enter, but you have to take some poor Dwarf's place to do it.
#1. My Kingdom For A Saddle - You need to get a saddle. You can either pay for it outright or have crafters make it for you. You need 10x of each: Saddle Buckle Parts (Blacksmith) , Saddle Stirrup Parts (Outfitter), Saddle Pommel parts (Artificer).
#2. Completely Crumbelievable - You have to take Jingles Crumbeard (The aformentioned dwarf) out of the race. To do this you need dirt on him. You get a special buff in NT that will let you go diplo NPCs in the area of the tavern in NT to get the necessary papers. Again I think you can just pay your way through this, but if you want to save money, you can either diplo for the papers or buy them from other diploers. You need 10 Background and 10 Blackmail. You'll also have to buy counterfeit racing papers in NT while you're at it.
#3. One Eyed Jacked - You need someone to forge those racing papers for you, so you have to go to a gnome in Mekalia to do it for you. Except she lost an eyepiece and wants you to get it. That eyepiece used to be in the bowels of Old Targonor Keep. (They moved her to the topside after revamping OT). It's on the same mob though: Suraya. Kill her and get the eyepiece, take it back to the gnome, and get your papers. (Fun Fact: When Suraya was down in OT's dungeon, she was human. When they moved her up to topside, she became undead. Creepy!)
One you get all of the above sorted, you're off to the races.
Seventh Quest: Take me to the races! Now that you've got your papers and your saddle, it's time to enter the races to see what's going on exactly. You literally have to go through two different race types (Against the clock, no one else). The first one is a ground race. As you go along, more and more umbral agents will attack you. It's not hard, unless you play a cleric. The second one is a flight race through checkpoints. If you ever did the Isle of Dawn "Scout the Isle" quest on the pegasus, it's the same thing, just longer with more checkpoints. Nothing attacks on the second one.
When you finish those two, you'll find a gnome, talk to her and she teleports you to a special spire where you find a dude named Sano waiting for you to play with his balls. Wait for friends to make fun of Sano's balls. Sano of course won't let you just kill him, that'd be too easy. He pops some balls into the air and you have to go to each one of them, in the proper order in order to reflect his magic (It's similar to the way you kill the Umbral Agent). This was always notoriously bugged. (Fun Fact: So many people had trouble with this one, that I would have to fly ahead of them, so they'd know where to go). The pattern was thus: 1 2 4 5 3 4 2 5 1 4 2 3 4 3 2 1 5 2 4 3 1 4 (The #1 orb was the one right behind him, and going clockwise). If I get a pic, I'll mark them. I know I took screenshots.
Finish that and you can go back to NT to turn in. Next you're on...
8th Quest: Creepy Cadavers - This one had you going to the middle of nowhere to kill Chath, a really obnoxious Vulmane. This is a time trial, really, it's obnoxious in that it was very very bugged. Supposedly they fixed it just before announcing the sunset but I never got the chance to test it. Basically you and your group would hail a portal, and it would port your group into the trial area (And give you a 10 minute buff which was really the timer). SO VERY OFTEN it would leave out group members. Which means you'd need to evac (if you can) and wait 10 minutesfor the portals to refresh. It's really stupid. I really hope you guys don't do it that way. Anyway you go in there, you have to stand in certain places because the spikes pop up, and you get tossed around. And then you kill Chath, then deal with his pet, then back to Chath and bam, done. Would be straightforward if it weren't for all the bugs.
I notice that John has replied, and I haven't finished yet!
9th quest: Summoning the Past. This was my favorite part. I LOVED these kills. You have to kill three Griffon Knights of legendary status or whatever. They're all based on Final Fantasy too. I actually have videos of all of these as well.
#1. Strife McCloud. That's not a typo, that's his name. He's on the edge of a cliff and randomly, he can summon a STAMPEDE of griffons to run you down and throw you off the cliff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iExsfhR8rso
#2. Shadow - He has a pet gryphon, Interceptor. He also runs around the island at bard speed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9JZ99bI1oM
#3. Syd Highwind - Holy crap is this cool. As you fight him, he summons a giant spectral griffon that FIRE BOMBS the kill area. The poor tank has to sit there and take it. The poor healer has to keep him alive. This one was sometimes bugged in that he'd hit the tank too many times in a row and hit you for about 25k. No tanks could take that, even the best geared ones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96NY-Yd3wTE
When you're done with this quest, you can go get your griffon now!
10th quest: Colorful Eggspression - Remember all those nest locations you visited? Go back to one and pick out the color you want. I used to have every color I miss my gryphons. Bring it back and incubate it and you have your very own young gryphon!
11th quest: The last one: Bag 'em and Tag 'em. This was the Magicborn Raid. It required at least 8 people I think, just to get in. But it would only allow a total of 18 in. And it used the same ridiculous teleport technique as Chath so once again, people would get left out and couldn't get credit.
Kill Magicborn and then you get your very own venerable, armored griffon, one of the fastest fliers in the game.
And that's the gryphon quest.
Editing this as I go along so I don't lose it.
First Quest: Griffons of a Feather: Ch. 1 Initiation - You have to talk to a guy named Scout Pellillo Cogswin. He was a little gnome that stood outside of the house surrounded by all the griffons, up the road from Southwatch.

Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
Jak, as always, awesome info. Thank you for taking the time to write that down.
For others, still open to other's experiences as well. The more perspectives, the better. Thanks!

Great write up, Jakkal! We should put those shouts of yours into the game for the OT knights.
I got a full collect of the griffon quest (minus the crumbeard diplo) so we should have all the quest text in the logs.

Sweet, that's my favorite questline in the whole game. I really loved it, but it was so difficult for people that weren't raid geared. That's why we did Get Your Griffons to help people out.

Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
Similarly, my favorite quest in EQ (1) was the Cleric Epic, and **my** Jakiil (me) ran "Get Your Epic" nights for those players who couldn't get anyone to help them
See, Jak's are just so cool.

Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
I always thought of a quest hub as just a place with a bunch of NPCs offering a ton of solo quests. Like the outposts in Beranid, the outpost south of NN, Cragwind, some Lucent circle stuff. If it's just a singluar NPC or perhaps 2 giving sequential quests I don't normally call it a "hub"
I only really called crafted and PotA gear "tiered" I don't think CW gear was tiered. It was a yellow drop with no stats until you "built" it at the alter thingy and that was it. The weapon I guess was tiered. Swamp armor was sorta tiered, but again I wouldn't really call it tiered. No one said like t1 Swamp tank LFG."
As for the "flow" i'm not sure what you meant by that, but if you meant how Jakkal responded then i'm pretty much on point with her. There was no flow of content. You could go wherever and do whatever.
As for acronyms, again pretty much what Jakkal said.
My only resource for walkthroughs and whatnot was usually just people in game or checking a few sites to see what they had. The unleashed forums and Karii's website which I cannot remember for the life of me right now.
So basically I have nothing that Jakkal didn't already cover lol

Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
I might have been thinking of the CW weapon. I think that started orange and could become red with an extra quest or stuff.
Re: Quest Hubs? Game areas, defined
Like Apaelias, I always took the phrase "Quest Hub" to refer to the on-rails experience of themepark games where you are led by the hand from area to another via quests. Create char -> do all quests in your immediate vicinity taking you to level x -> Get final quest that sends you to next area with tons of new quests -> do all quests there before getting quest to go to next area -> ad infinitum.
I hated them.
