Ranger ranged attacks

Forgive me if I have missed this problem being answered elsewhere, but I have just created my first Ranger as I looked forward to trying archery as my main attack. However, despite the Wiki saying that Rangers get "Warden's ranged attack" at level 1, my character doesn't seem to have any ranged attack at all until he gets "Deadly Shot" at level 6. Is this a bug or has that skill been removed for a particular reason? It seems that Ranger is the only class specifically aimed at archery and even then has fewer ranged skills than melee ones, which is a great shame for anyone that wants to play a ranged character that isn't spell oriented.

Warden's Ranged Attack is under your general abilities, not your Adventuring Abilities. I'm not sure why Sigil did that, I guess because every other class has their generic "Ranged Attack" there. But you do get it at level 1 and that's where it can be found. You can drag it to your hotbar.

Thank you for the information. I found it and it does work, although I must say I am very disapointed is at how underwhelming archery is in this game. In fact I wonder if there is actually any point in ranged combat? It only seems to be useful as an initial 'puller' to draw mobs into melee range. Which seems to limit your options only to ranged spellcasting or melee damage, regardless of what class you choose to play.

Ranger was one of the more popular classes, but I didn't main one, so I can't say for sure. I do know you need to stay at ranged and generally casters do too. This presents a problem if you're soloing. SOE changed the way Rangers worked at some point that instead of going Ranged or Melee, you get both in a stance.

You're supposed to kite as a ranger as you get a minion that can somewhat hold a mob for a few seconds and various roots and snares to slow them down. I'd personally like to change that minion to a true pet to allow them a greater ability to tank.

Once you have all your roots and snares, you'll be able to kill anything that can be kited. Just keep at it - it will pay off eventually.

I don't know how the class works later, but on Isle of Dawn melee attacks do a minimum of 10x the damage of general bow skill and even when you do get a proper 'bow skill' you are still better off using your sword. All in all a very disappointing class, you might just as well just use a Warrior with a bow as a 'puller' since that works pretty much the same as the Ranger anyway.

Levels 1-10 will give you an idea of what a class is like, but it's also the early start to the class and in some cases, not a good representation of it. For example the shaman does not shine until it gets its patron at level 15 (And before then it is one of the most painful classes to play).

I believe the ranger is similar. While it can use improvement, I think later on the ranged attacks are very good and plentiful.

Also keep in mind that we are in a very early state, even class abilities, and shouldn't be compared to live yet. Any abilities that are simple, like most melee abilities are, will be in a better shape than complicated abilities. Not everything is set up in the back end yet, and will change as we continue working on it.

The 'ranged attack'/'Warden's ranged attack' is the ranged equivalent to 'auto attack'. It just does the base weapon damage. The melee skills you click on all give bonuses to the attack. There are more ranged abilities that you get later that give higher bonuses.

For instance, in live when I made my ranger, I entered the final IoD dungeon at level 9 and dinged while in there. I decided to see how far I could get before returning to skill up. Made it to the last boss with some difficulties but wasn't able to take him out. Trained the level 10 skills which included a few more ranged abilities, and went back in. Night and day difference. I was able to plow through things and take out the boss with no issues.

Now that being said, melee spec'd ranger does tend to do more damage than ranged spec, but that's the trade off of being up close so you're in direct danger of getting hit. Ranged Ranger can snare enemies and kite them around, taking them out without being hit themselves. The trade off there is it takes more player skill to properly kite.

And once again, we're still in early development state. Not all abilities are scripted, not all scripted abilities are doing their full effect, and not all player skills and attributes are taken into account in the combat code. You can't use the current system to get a proper feel for classes.
