The discussion about locked rifts got me thinking; if it's possible to selectively lock them why reinvent the wheel? The beauty of the EQ port system IMO wasn't reliance on certain classes but the fact that there were only a select few locations across an entire continent and largely in rather isolated areas. While North Karana was just a wasteland with wizard spires you could travel through East Karana for Highpass Keep, into South Karana for Splitpaw, or several zones past West Karana to eventually hit Permafrost. Likewise, a Dreadlands port meant having to brave the wastes in order to get anywhere meaningful.
If you did want to bring some class reliance for ports though one way to do it with a little less hassle would be conjured consumables required for rift use similar to the summoned rez healer items.
