The Rift system was a bad fix, cheap flying mounts was worse. Again, EQ solved this problem with Druid/Wizard ports - the Emu would need something similar.=
The discussion about locked rifts got me thinking; if it's possible to selectively lock them why reinvent the wheel? The beauty of the EQ port system IMO wasn't reliance on certain classes but the fact that there were only a select few locations across an entire continent and largely in rather isolated areas. While North Karana was just a wasteland with wizard spires you could travel through East Karana for Highpass Keep, into South Karana for Splitpaw, or several zones past West Karana to eventually hit Permafrost. Likewise, a Dreadlands port meant having to brave the wastes in order to get anywhere meaningful.

If you did want to bring some class reliance for ports though one way to do it with a little less hassle would be conjured consumables required for rift use similar to the summoned rez healer items.

The thing that people forget about travel through EQ is that it was not just limited to finding a druid or a wizard. In their absence you also had the Luclin portals that would port you to any wizard spire (can't remember about druid rings) and then the books in PoK took you to any number of places. Really its not too far off the rift system. You even have to pay for rifting. Travel in EQ was largely free unless you hired a player. I used to play a druid and a wizard. I used to also hate when you couldn't find one in the game to port you. For that reason i do support some kind of easy travel access just so you don't spend hours trying to get to your group. The thing I wondered about is I took a break from the game for a bit and when I came back they had added a bunch of rifts. Maybe just don't have as many rifts so people are inspired to get a boat or a flying mount. (please not a Randolph!)
