Game Crashing issues...

I've had issues with the game crashing to desktop.

If I stay in the same zone, it's not really a issue. But if I zone, switch continents, then go somewhere with a door.... it's crash time.

It seems like something is wrong with how the textures swap in and out of video memory. I have like 4 Gig's of that, I'm not sure why it's swapping at all...

Doors are a biggest problem as the game doesn't seem to draw or cash what is behind them until the door is opened, then it has to quickly load some new textures.. then...slow... lag...and.... desktop.

Or it will things render really funny with crazy textures for a few minutes before crashing to desktop.

This is a huge issue when turning in quests. Although it's not consistent. Sometimes I can play for hours no problem others only a few minutes.

    1. If anyone else has this problem, what helps? I've tried a number of video and renderer settings with no change. Will some other game setting help?

    2. Does running in XP compatibility mode or something of the like help.

    3. Is there anything else that can be done to help?

    Thank you.

You have not given us much, like what system do you run?

Anyway try turning off all occlusions.

    What runs in background?

I know I'm a little vague on the hardware. This is because I have a "lan party room" with 6 different machines in it. (I only play one 1, I refuse to 2 box, but my family wife and children play with me)

The machines range wildly in age. Some are running windows Vist others Win7 (one might still be on XP). They are P4's - i5's, 32 bit and 64 bit machines, some have 4 gigs of memory some have 16. The only common link between all of them, is they all have a Nvida graphic card, although some have a 8800 and others 480 gtx.

But no matter the hardware, ever single machines behaves the same.

I don't think it's a hardware issue, given the range of hardware that it's being played on.

If it's a software issue, maybe something is "known" to have problems maybe settings of a config change will help.

I'll check on occlusions. I keep as little running in the back ground as possible, I even make the kids exit things like steam which should be benign.
The game HATES alt-tab. If you try your guaranteed to have texture problems on your return, and crash to the desktop a short time later.

I can give a dxdiag if that helps... be prepared to see a phone book. (Do people still know that those are really big book about 4-5 inches thick of very thin paper? pre-internet life was a crazy place... like the old west)

you could try posting in the support forum so that a tsr looks at it

Thats helpful actually, because you have essentially removed much of what I had in mind as the issue.

I will be honest the ATI fanboi is me wants to say, IT'S NVIDIA issue, but that would be wrong. :)

However it is a common link, do you run same driver revision on all of them? Is it the latest? beta whql? I'm not focusing oin iut being nvidia here, its a common link so it is naturally a good place to start. As an aside, I own 7970 desktop, and 7970 mobile and the new AMD GCN cards suffer a texture problem with VG, man they just disappear on screen, or I can see bizarre texture ropes and strings all over. It was not so on my 5000 or 6000 series. I am wondering if this is driver related, if they are all diff revisions can you consolidate to one? just as test?

Gaming family? that's so damn cool BTW.

With the wide range of hardware and all the version make sure everything is up to date driver wise. I have 7 PCs too that range across the board but the one thing I usually miss is drivers. It's hard to remember so so many different pieces of hardware. Also make sure your directX version are up to date as well.

I get a door problem where the door doesn't load and I can just walk through it until I'm in the house, but no crash.

You probably also want to make sure that your operating systems are patched to have the full DirectX 9.0c drivers. Old versions of XP should have it, but Vista and Win7 frequently ship with a pared down version. It's caused problems with Vanguard for many people over the years.

Here's a link if you'd like. Runtime Installer.

Edit: For the record ( since this always gets asked ) - running the installer does nothing to harm your current DirectX drivers.. it just adds on old functionality that was not included in the install of your OS.

delete cache folder under vg install. Make sure you have anisoptric filtering and all other options in ati/nvidea panel are "application controlled". Do a regular
    /flush all
when using rifts a lot. It all might help. It could be issue of too low video memory on your video card..

Reference was made to DirectX 9c drivers, but would DirectX 11 be a problem?

No, having DirectX 11 is not at a problem at all, as long as you also have version 9.0c

^^ Sinisna is right, however it's still a good idea to check and make sure Directx9.0c is installed on your computer.
