Hi guys I'm pretty new to the game and play a lv 16 dk. Since I'm a tank I realise gear is very important for me and am wondering if I mine metal and blacksmith as I level can I make armor that is greater than what I can get from my open world and dungeon tasks. Currently ftp but considering gold membership.

    All the best,

Not a crafter myself, but from what I've read from others you should be at least 1 tier up from your adventuring level to craft your own useful armor.

So at lvl 16 you should be lvl 20+ to craft gear you can use

Wow that's gonna take some work! I got my blacksmithing to 5 last night! That would mean harvesting in areas that all the mobs are way higher level than me?

you could harvest the resources or buy them or join a guild and get some help.

I do happen to have a few crafters - I just don't like it, what I do is level a char and come back to harvest once I'm above the lvl to aggro - usually I'll get my char to 30-40 before harvesting

So in essence, that char uses drops and quested gear, then goes and harvests to provide resources for my crafters

as stated above , your crafter needs to be higher level than your adventurer to make meaningful gear. The influx of reitemized gear at lower levels virtually assures that quested and even dropped gear can surpass most crafted gear. But there is a certain joy you get from making your own stuff and building sets with stats you like. The recent change to have the continental effects scale up is also something to consider. As to harvesting, there are plenty of places to harvest above your adv level without mobs attacking you. Skilling up harvesting is fairly important. (remember, as long as your general harvest skill is high enough, you can group harvest higher level materials).
most of all, just have fun. One last thing. aside from gear, crafters make useful expendable items like runes of health, invisibility, levitation. all very helpful.

I know this thread is a bit old but for posterity's sake I'll add my little experience here.

The three toons I play regularly (casual player here and almost always solo) each have a craft skill of at least 10 levels above adventuring level. All three are general harvest skill capped and specific harvest skills are into tier 5... the leather crafting shaman is L33 adv only because she has to skin tier 4 to make her gear. The others are below 25. The point I'm making is that with little help and a bit of persistence you can and will find you way through to get the resources you need. Skilling and leveling crafting is not as gruesome a task as it may seems at first. There are many quest lines that are both profitable (coin, gear and experience) and interesting while staying a bit challenging.

There are a couple very good posts elsewhere on these forums and at www.thetelonproject.com to assist your crafting career.
In addition, feel free to make copious use of the members in the /craft chat channel in-game. There always seem to be at least a few folks familiar with whatever problem you bump into there.
