For someone who is supposed to want my help, he really doesn't make any effort!

Does anyone have a reliable gambit against him?

I have tried all sorts but I don't appear to have the cards (or the skill?) to stop him from laying his 10 point smackdown which finishes me off every time :(

Any help b4 I leave the Isle would be great :)

Well, you don't get the Charming Distraction card until after you've dealt with him a couple times and have already worked out what works, so excepting that for the moment...

This is Taejin's card pool, by the way.

When I encountered him on the isle, I ran flattery- and reason-heavy with cards to debuff his inspire and demand pool. Taejin's Word (the 8-10 influence card) requires 1/1/1/1, and Judicious Declaration requires 3 inspire. So, if you can keep him from building demand and/or inspire (by using retorts that drain, and statements that give him neither), you will have a much easier time for it. From there, Taejin's Presence debuffs your demand and inspire pool, locking out those assertions more than likely. In the end, it boils down (like the hobgoblins' parleys) to scoring influence early, listening any time you have influence, and keeping him from building the resources he needs to sway the parley in his favor because once that happens (since for your card pool on the isle, to reassert influence you're giving him all the resources he needs) you're boned.

Excellent cards to win from Taejin are: Warriors Demand; Disarming Rebuttal; Exchange of Views; Greener Pastures; and Itemized Comparison

I am new to Vanguard and had a heck of a time with the Pillars in Harmony quest/winning the match with Taejin. Here are the cards I used to finally best him:

    (yellow "Flatter" cards)
    Greener Pastures
    Grand Boast
    Enticing Whisper
    Elven Unity

    (green "Reason" cards)
    Disarming Rebuttal
    Itemized Comparison
    Infailable Proof

    (blue "Inspire" card)
    Loud Critisim

The stradegy used here was basically to completely starve him of blue "Inspire" points so that he could not use his "Taijin's Word" card nor his "Judicious Declaration" card. Accomplishing that, the next thing I did was very carefully play the cards I had to try to keep myself "in control of the conversation". This included using "Listen" at opportune times. This stradgey worked on the first try after trying many other stradegies that did not work.

If you do not have some of the cards mentioned in my list above, I may have purchased some of them from the card merchant in a house in Sun Village. They cost a silver and change each, I bought them all. Not sure if this was necessary or not as I am still figuring this game out but it's what I did.

Good luck! This was a frustrating quest but in the end was a lot of fun as it had challenge to it (at least for a newbie to Vanguard).

PS I know it's too late to help the OP but I hope this post can help others.
