New to Role Playing;

  1. Hello there,
I've never roleplayed before and I'd like to give it a shot. I wanted to know if there were any general guidelines or "rules" on how to do so, ie: how often to be 'in character' when you're in the game, how to get along with non-RP characters, etc. It would also be nice to have examples of what is considered "overboard" in my roleplaying techniques. I don't want to be running around and shouting olde English to the zone. Is there a way to mark yourself as a roleplayer in VG like a few of the older games?
I'm planning on rolling a psionicist, first, specifically for roleplaying (I've never played a pure caster before so it will be an interesting journey).
I can't seem to find much lore on psionicists, though. I would like to read up a bit and sort of prepare myself for the personality in which I'm going to emerge myself. Psionicists seem to have a whimsic, mysterious, and gaean mind about them--although this could differ depending on the race--which intrigues me. Does anyone have a link to some reading material or know of an area in Telon I can travel to in order to learn about the class?
I'm going to read up on the racial lore and decide whether I'd like to play a male or female once I've picked up enough information on the class and feel comfortable. Honestly, I had planned on just going-with-the-flow and hopping right into the game but my name was reserved; I tried a few more but had no luck so now I'm back to the thought process. =(
In essence, I'm going to have a psionicist and a bard (both specifically for roleplaying), one of which is a male and the other a female. I've had a few character backstories made up, just for fun, back when I used to write a lot in high school. I'm going to construct new stories for each of these characters. Is there a place I can post them? Here on the forums, or on a website dedicated to roleplaying?
I am on the Telon server and will surely post both of my character names once I have them if anyone wants to get together and adventure sometime. I hope to write about some of my adventures and post them in either a blog, role-playing forum, or something of the sort (wherever my character bio goes).
    Thanks for your help!
  2. Greetings and welcome to Vanguard,
I am an avid role player but also new to the Vanguard world. Role Playing is both entertaining to the player and others around you. There is no set standard on when you should or shouldn't be in character when interacting with others. If you want to run around speaking in old english you will not annoy anyone unless you spam the chat channel for the entire server. I can give you an example that you will run into and give the most common response.
    1. I am speaking in character asking about your day and you have the option to speak or not speak in character. How you respond does not change me being in character.
Greetings traveler, how goes the hunt this fine day?

I just logged on, looking for a group.
I see, being with fellow warriors keeps the blade from my skull I always say. There is usually travelers that come and go looking for wares at the crossing. Be carefull out there, lots of warriors have ventured these parts never to return.
What level are you? I am trying to run this quest.
Ah, I have seen many days. Sometimes I feel I have more days behind me than ahead. These grey hairs and old bones are proof of that. Let me think, I believe I have seen seventy seasons.

You get two responses from this type of interaction, either a player will ask why are you talking like that and think you are funny, then you can speak out of character of you like, or they will get into character with you.
Now stop and think of your character, what personality do you want to convey and what is your characters history that brought him to where he/she is today. When you create a history and personality traits of your character, role playing is much easier. You can anticipate how you will respond and role playing will become second nature.

    Good Luck.
  3. Welcome to Vanguard,
Being new to roleplaying, you may need to play around with different personalities for your character until you find the best fit. Landy77 gave you some good examples on how you can interract with other players. You might want to try developing a pretty basic background for your character. It doesn't need to be too involved and you can always add to it. Once you get going, then it'll come naturally and I find it enhances the playing experience.
There is a channel for roleplayers -/tavern. It's pretty quiet now, but if you join and start talking you'll probably get some to join you and get some pointers there as well.
If you're interested in joining a guild of fellow roleplayers, there are two that I know of. The Preferiti ran by Aasha and Blackstone ran by myself (Dhelmar). Take a look at the guild description on the guild tab and see if either fits you.
    Again, welcome and have fun!
