    Hi all.
Just started and created my first character. Did the harvesting quest and picked my two - skinning and reaping. I have the tools but don't seem to be able to harvest anything. I really don't know what mobs I might be able to skin, but I've yet to find any that allow me to skin them. With reaping, I think I see the nodes - they have pink flowers and are the only plant that highlights under my curser. But nothing happens no matter how I click on them, they don't even show a tooltip. Can someone help a noob out?

You might be looking at some quest plant. Reaping plants are hard to see in grass. Ctrl-tab to aim for next node of any kind, or you can macro /tar jute for example. Can only skin certain animals, not birds or most monster kind usually.

To expand on skinning, if you think in real life it might be skinable it usually is. Most amphibians are skinable, almost all animals even undead ones some times can. There are even plant monsters that can be reaped, stone monsters than can be quarried and the ever popular treant that can be chopped into kindling.

Need a little more info on where you are at for specific help.
    Are you on IOD?
In general, for reaping, you are looking for Jute plants. Skinning newbie area's are wolfs, bears, frogs and turtles.

Yes I am in IOD. I've been killing frogs and gators and I have no option to skin. Also I turned off the grass display and the only plants left are the ones with pink flowers. I don't know if that's what I'm looking for, but it's all I see. Even though they highlight I can not click them at all.

IoD is bad because no one else can go over to check anything out. Harvesting should be fully automatic, it's a form of combat, should switch between harvesting stuff and adventuring stuff all on its own and select the appropriate tool. The icon should look like a pick and you right click, but you can also auto attack it. Skill selection + tools is all you need; to skin, you do have to loot first, but I'd guess everyone does that anyway. The jute plant should target like any mob, same as a tree, metal node, or mineral. From what I recall, a bunch of plants were right across the bridge on the way towards temple.

If somehow you just did the wrong thing, there would be an error about a lack of skill or no item equipped. If IoD itself is just bugged towards any harvesting, I'd petition a GM under help & support.

IoD stuff didn't seem harvestable until you got over the second bridge to the magistrate's house- I don't recall being able to skin/ harvest the animals/ plants before then. Not sure what you ean by "turning off grass display", but the other harvestable stuff- trees, metals, etc- are usually labeled- eg you'll see "weakened oak" in the air above the tree or some such, or "small mineral node" or "jute" - may want to check under video options that these are enabled (sometimes initially key bound to "N" (I think) - same key that shows/ hides names-

Yeah.....I just got over the second bridge and guess what happened? I can harvest. Boy do I feel like a spanked a$$!

Haha well, probably first among many. It's like that.

Yep- I remember going to he trainer the first time and then going crazy looking for things to harvest- nice thing is that it only happens once :) and even better is that VG still has things like this that need to be figured out, not everything is being spoonfed-

To echo what Tanstaafl has noted about turning on the names, this is something that I have seen a number of times in the help channel where the mob names were unknowingly turned off and therefore harvesting nodes were not recognized either.

One more point, for skinning, the mobs have to be (man, it's been a long, long time since I was starting out skinning - open beta-ish) but the mob has to be level 6 if memory serves me correctly (may be level 5) to yield any hides.

Just started playing the game (loving it) having a similar problem with mining metal nodes. I have mining and quarrying and I can harvest the stone nodes but it says I don't have the skill to mine the metal nodes. I am in the correct area as the resources are named,(thanks to the above posts clear advice I managed to find it) just can't figure out why I can't mine metal.
I would appreciate any advice or thoughts on the matter.
Mind you could all be me being stupid, as still trying to figure out how to chat in region/world chat and not just /say. Oh the joys of being new o_O

Two things, best way to be sure y ou did not get bugged is go to harvest trainer and choose to change what ever skill slot mining is in (primary or secondary). You will not lose any points in the other skill nor any point in your harvest skill.

Then double check you have a pickaxe, even equip it.

    Then test a node.
  14. Karvokh Member

I might be on the entirely wrong track but you do have a pickaxe as well as your quarrying hammer, right? An actual miner's pickaxe and not a "harvesting pickaxe".
IoD harvest nodes are intended to start a new harvester on their path, so they shouldn't have any skill-level requirement attached, beyond just needing to have the correct harvesting specialty and tool.

There is also a generic harvesting skill, beyond your two chosen specialties. This is used when group harvesting, when joining in on a resource that you cannot natively harvest (in your case, anything other than stone and metal -- plants, lumber, hides).
When helping other people harvest in a group, you use the generic harvest skill and a "harvesting tool" of the appropriate type. The harvesting tool only requires generic harvest skill, and is only of use when helping someone with your non-specialty harvest types.

If this isn't the solution to your problem, then sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    -----------

As for figuring out how to chat in regional channels, use the command /listchannels to see which ones you are currently joined.
You'll see a list of channels with numbers before each one.
Just use /1 yourtexthere to chat in channel 1 (which is usually the default regional channel, /2 being auction/trade).

Agree that everything should not be spoonfed, but once you get to the Harvesting NPC it would be nice if you were given directions on where to go for harvesting. Currently the NPC takes the materials from your inventory and that's it you are done without any further explanation or even another harvesting quest to complete. As a newbie, I was left thinking that's it, what do I do now, where do I go. I'm seeing a lot of questions on the IOD and help channels about harvesting.

Just started a new char, a Varanthari, and there are harvesting quests! Here's an axe, go chop a tree. When you return, you get another quest that explains about needing 20 to make 1 board. This is so much more info than what is given on IOD!!

They need to fix the IOD harvesting for sure!
