With heavy hearts, we announce the sunset for Vanguard

It really sucks that the game is being shut down, but I can't say I'm surprised. So many good memories, though. I'll be missing the enormous dungeons and open world. This was the best mmo I ever played and I will miss it a lot. I'll be playing Archeage and while it doesn't have the open world and massive dungeons that Vanguard had, at least it has ships, player housing and a more realistic style of graphics.

I'm still hoping there will be an mmo in the future that has huge dungeons, realistic graphics, no instances and is more based on PVE like Vangyuard, but I won't get my hopes up. I guess people like us just aren't important enough for anyone to make a game for.

As an off and on player since 2008, it is sad to see the end. For me this game will always be the symbol of the other direction mmos could have gone and what might have been. Every time I log on I sigh because of all the untapped potential this game always had. Unfortunately it seems mmos are destined to be cookie cutter themeparks with shoebox instances. Guess it is time to retire from gaming for good probably get more stuff done anyways.

I'm still really dissapointed to see how SoE treated this game. It's been the best MMORPG I've ever played gamewise, incredible immersion! APW is one of the best raid dungeons ever across all games, for me personally only rivaled by The Temple of Veeshan (*Velious, EQ1). The community is also the best I've ever seen. I really thought there would be a place for a game like Vanguard on the market, considering how * *dumbed down, instant gratification, roll your forehead on the keyboard and win* other games are. I guess there was just never a proper long term plan for Vanguard, with the dev teams in charge changing so often and having different ideas.

What dissapointed me the most is how SoE let it go down, showing absolute no heart or respect for their paying customers:
-The patch(es) in December that made the game unplayable for weeks, chasing many players away.
-Those Unifier Crates that appeared on the market around New Years for SS999. Nice way to milk out some last cash from your long loyal customers.
-Then the sunset announcement shortly after, clever...

I will NEVER give SoE my money again through ANY game, having been a customer for 14 years.

Finally a big thanks to the awesome community, all friends I've met here and especially the PUG raid community folks, all the best wishes to you all. A shout out to my (former) guildies as well in "Heroes Of The Flame", "Darkwind", "Origin" and "Lux Arcana".

    Cheers!

    /Aathos, Hrakir

A huge thank you and farewell to everyone here, I hope we can find each other in a similar game soon (No SOE games) but until that happens, take care and thank you for all the friendships and memories, it's been an absolute pleasure playing with you all.

It is sad. This was the first MMO I was super hyped for...I will never forget just getting my license and going to Gamestop to pre-order VG. It gave my SWG fanboyism more lands to roam!!

But here's why it's gonna be OK:
    1) I understand the concept of company assets. Companies, especially large ones like SOE, must hold themselves accountable for their incredibly fragile investments. Yes, every game, no matter how indie/corporate you are is an investment. Vanguard, through all of its glory, was never a game that was truly optimized. Out of all the SOE games, VG is a game that takes tremendous resources and effort to become even playable. If you were a company that had games that were really well optimized & polished, wouldn't you too consider dropping a horrendously unoptimized game that required a ****ton of labor that nobody plays to avoid financial hiccups? They tried for 8 years to avoid it. But if they decide it is time, I believe them.
    2) The game was doomed early, SOE still kept it going as long as they did. Yeah, they probably had many business discussions to shelve it early too. But they DIDN'T, and we got to enjoy it more.
    3) The death of Vanguard will inspire even more beautiful open world MMOs. Oh, no, VG will not die in vain. The memory of MMOs like Vanguard die while passionate gamers mourn, and with it, game developers, set on creating a new frontier of how games like VG made them feel. A chance for new, better designs to fathom... Out with the old awesome, allows to bring in the new awesome.
    4) Cash shop destroyed the game already. Yeah it was nice to have all those houses & boats without having to work for them, but that's WHY they were great; because you had to work hard for them. I spent half my livliehood on Vanguard with the dream of one day leveling enough to build a boat and house. When this livelihood is banished by the click of a PAY NOW button, what livelihoods in the game remain? To get the levels, people traveled to different areas for a change of scenery. Their life was travelling for the sake of travelling. Their work to build a boat/house was to experience NEW ways of travelling. The reason why people played the game...to work hard towards something...was tremendously undermined.
    5) I got videos and screenies. It's not the same, sure, being able to roleplay all I wanted, alone...chilling in the world of Telon...for years... but in reality... a lot of us sad about it don't even play Vanguard anymore, and will be nothing but a memory whether it was shut down or not. So if you are crying about Vanguard with me, then you better make damn sure you get as much footage and screenies as you can to help relive the awesome memories. EVERYONE had their own perspective on the game.
Go call out from work and do the end of game celebration...Long live the love of Vanguard.

    TooLong;Didn'tRead- It's gonna be ok m8

You know what you miss when you can't have it anymore. So it is with Vanguard. For gods sake Memories on something are filtered by your own heart & soul and you only remember the good moments. Let me end this Era of gaming with very short conversation from chat in Thestra of someone who i assume enter Spider Caves. "i HATE Spiders, why all quest involve killing spiders ?" - "Well, you are on the web"..

    Farewell guys n'dolls

    Farewell Telonians!

From the bottom of my heart, Vanguard will stand as the greatest online gaming time I have ever experienced, and unikely will it ever be topped. From the near perfection PvE vision to the bug ridden code mess we played, it was a not with out its hitches, but still managed to capture me like no other game.

To the best community I have ever shared a world with, I will and do miss you.

I fully intended to be on tonight for the server shutdown.... But alas real life has consipred and I am not sure I will make it.

So to all I /Salute you!

Farewell to a game I played for only a year or so, but liked so much.

I am not saying farewell to friends however that I have made in VG. I will continue to be friends and we will see each other again I am sure of it.
It's a sad day, and I didn't think I would be so sad, but last night when I was running around knowing it would probably be my last night in game, I choked up a little. (honestly)

Oh well..... see you guys in another world, and thanks for all the fun!

Farewell to a game I wish I could have played more.

Farewell, all those folks I got known over all those years and also to those players I have missed, This was quite some time and yes, at the end it leaves quite some sadness. I just wanted to drop those lines before this Forums get lost too, as it been announced. One thing is kind of funny, the mmorpg I been coming from back in time, which had also a ****** release over 10 years ago, is still up and running.
