Question about positioning

Is it not the case as it is with other games that if you melee from behind, the mob cannot block or dodge your attacks?

If so, why do I never see tanks turning the mobs back to the group? I'm certainly no expert at tanking, but I was told to do that way back in (some other game) and do it out of habit now. It seems to annoy some people.

And if not, it still seems like a good idea so that I can more easily tell if I lose agro and I am closer to possible adds than the rest of the group.

When I'm playing a melee dps and get behind the mob, people ask me why I'm doing it since I'm not a rogue. It seems as though it is not common practice in Vanguard, at least in PUGs.

At higher levels, most good tanks will in fact make NPCs face away from the group to avoid directional (frontal) attacks.

It's true, there are no real advantages to attacking a mob from behind in Vanguard, other than for rogues. Back in EQ monsters could not riposte/block/etc attacks that were not from the front, but they didn't carry that over. I'm not sure why, it made things more interesting, as did mob push.

However, many classes do have abilities that gain bonuses (extra damage, etc) if you are flanking a target, basically being behind or on either side. And as mentioned you are able to avoid frontal type attacks by positioning opposite the tank.

You are correct to turn the mob away from the group or raid. Getting used to it now will only help later. Like Sinisna said, later most bosses (and some trash in KDQ as well) will have nasty frontal AoEs, will flurry, etc. and that is bad for the whole group.

Not only Rogues benefit from being behind the mob. Rangers have some attacks that can only be performed from behind or flanking (beside) the mob. There may be other classes as well. I really can't think of a good reason not to turn the mob away from the group. One great reason to be a tank--you don't have to spend all your time looking at troll but t!

    This.
I do it out of habit. Even if I'm with a rogue who can teleport behind the mob hehe

I tend to turn mobs on the raid just to screw up Cummings, Wufei and Fingurs parses and try to frontal Ratief who is annoyingly hard to kill for a squishie. So your saying this is wrong?

You will never get Ratief killed that way. Ratief is, in fact, extremely easy to kill. All you have to do is ask yourself "what would Lav do?" and, generally, the result is a dead Ratief. This strat is particularly effective at Cakina.

Yes, you are doing it wrong. You should take a note from the Unleashed tanks that like to run in circles so that there's no chance in heck that I'll manage to get a burn in.
