Just came across this section on Test Server accidentally today. Logged in and had a blissfully peaceful afternoon on the Isle of Dawn. A few oddities which seemed to sort themselves out as I played.

Now reading a bit deeper. Where can I get general info about the function of the test server. I have no expertise in current computer technology, nor have I much experience with this type of game. But perhaps there is something an ignorant old bum like myself can do to be helpful, even if it is just playing at low levels and recording any oddities?

Or should I just get lost?

anyone that copies a character to test server can play there, however, there are frequent changes and even character wipes in the process of updating code and trying things out.

The test server is just that: a server for testing.

Any bugs you encounter there should be reported using the /bug command.

Usually, you would want to be on the test server to test specifics things, for example an upcoming dungeon revamp.
But of course, you are (mostly) free to test whatever you want on it.

OK - so basically it is a professional thing and no place for permanence.

However, it is a peaceful sort of place. At least I wasn't subjected to 5 people using the same workbench, standing across and even inside each other. Uncomfortable.

I did however notice that crafting was in itself less nerve racking, smoother than in the "live" game. Is there any value in reporting any odd "bugs" I may encounter on the Isle of Dawn if these are not bugs that occur in the "live" game?

    Of course!

Sinisna, are you a Dev in disguise? Your posts are always so technically organized and concise.

No, I am not. But thank you!

You kids are getting an old man confused. Who is testing what for who on this server.

Also if I import a char to this test server for practice purposes, to what extent does it affect the original char on the live site? ..er.. not at all I hope.

    Pretty please.

Players are testing the things I have mentioned in my previous post for the developers.

Just as playing one character would not affect your other characters (because they are different),
your character on Test server is entirely different (even if it is a copy) from the one on Live.

    Think of it this way:
When you take a file on your PC, copy it, and paste it to another folder,
you can make all the changes you want to the copy without affecting the original.

Thanks Sinisna - sorry to take up your time, but some of us need things explaining clearly which are no doubt obvious to the more experienced.
    I can manage now!!
    Over and out.

Try some different crafting areas for fewer players. Personally, I like Konarthi point and Martok. Never crowded--rarely see anyone at all.

Thanks Schiller. Will remember that when I get that far.

Oops forgot to ask. Is the character transfer one way only or is there a return ticket to "live"?

You aren't moving your character to Test, you are having a copy made and that copy placed on Test. Your character will remain on Live and this is where you should be leveling. The copy which would now exist on Test is distinct from the character on Live and will never come back to Live, nor will any leveling, currency, gear, etc. ever be transferred from Test to Live.

The idea of the character is exactly that, to make a copy that you can then play on Test to check out new development that has not been added to Live as of yet. This is helpful in testing out new areas, encounters, loot, etc. so bugs can be reported to the Devs before being migrated to Live.

Thanks - yes, I understand all that now. But as a retired academic wandering in a comparatively new world where the people speak strange jargon with lots of odd abbreviations, I like to be sure I have the "t"s crossed and the "i"s dotted before I file the subject.

What I really wanted to confirm was that a char created in "test" could not be transferred to be used in the "live" server.
I can see that sending a copy back after some work in "test" would be totally unacceptable in the presence of the original.
The other is probably just as unacceptable - just wanted to be sure.

In an attempt to clarify, a character created on Test would remain there and not be copied to Live. However, there are occasions where re-copying a character from Live to Test does make sense, such as after reaching a higher level or obtaining new set of better gear, and desiring to test the new abilities/gear on a Test mob/encounter. Consequently, folks still working on finalizing their character with raid gear or other end-game items may re-copy their character from Live to Test after acquiring said gear on Live, just to see how it may affect an encounter on Test. For instance, specific 'procs' on armor or weapons may affect a mob differently, and folks may want to view results on a Test mob before this mob gets moved to Live to prove out any instability or bugs.

    Hope this helps!
