(insert image doesnt work had to use edit html)
Trying to get an understanding of how to use the directions, so what does all this mean?
Level 13 Artificer (at the time of this post)
Material Finsihing section has a -38 in it, what does this number mean?
    Sculpting Util is 148
    Sculpting is 133
    Sculpting Tools is 129
Do I need to bring that Material finishing number to 0 ? I'd like to get a handle on how this works early enough so I dont have to do any "fixing" later on. I used google to learn about tables from the wiki. But why lock a skill from going up?

The "-" (negative) number is a known bug. If you log out and back in, it should correct it. The natural state is blank (no number showing) or a number. When that number is present and does not have the "-" in it, it means that you have skills that can applied to a specific skill.
I recommend http://www.thetelonproject.com/craf...ng-skills-guide as the best and most straitforward guide in how and where you should apply the points.
  3. Some added food for thought.
Each level you go up gives you 24 skill points for your Finishing and Refinishing skillset. The max points you can put in a specific skill (Tool, Utility, Station) is +10. At level 13, the most you can have in a skill is 130 (without gear bonuses). At 24 points over 3 skills, the natural inclination will be to put 8 in each.
Different crafting actions are unlocked at different levels, HOWEVER, not all actions are created equal. The guide Jaradis wrote gets the best actions available as soon as you can get them. Sometimes that means leaving a skill very low, and maximizing other skills. Ideally, you balance your skills to *10 per level with gear. Early on it means lots of +Station skill, but at level 50, you'll be looking for lots of +Tool skill.

I re-edited my post and didnt see that you replied so fast. I have been tring to go evenly with my attibutes. I dont fully understand how the points get spent on the skills tab (shown) nor how to use the buttons or their purpose.
Does that mean that there are 38 points that need to be distributed in Material Finishing? If so, how?
I assume Refining and Finishing use the same tables wiki.
  5. You distribute skills by using the skills. For example, when you use a Tool Action (any action that requires you to use your tools) and your Tool Skill is set to "+", you have a chance to increase your Tool Skill if you have available points. Your "Utility Skill" has a chance to go up whenever you use an action that requires a utility consumable. All other actions are "Station Skills". The more difficult the recipe, the more likely it'll be to apply one of your available points to that skill. You can control how the points get applied to skills by setting the direction. The "lock" symbol in the middle means you've locked down that skill and it will never go UP or DOWN. The "+" symbol means that the skill will only ever go up, but only when you have available points to be applied. The "-" symbol means that the skill will only ever go down, but ONLY when 1) you have no other available points available, and 2) when you have one other skill set to "+". Now that I can see the image... First suggestion. Have you specialized yet? I understand you're level 13, so you may have missed the quest to specialize, but you need to make that decision soon. WHEN you do specialize as either a Carpenter or Minerologist, under your Material Specialization sub-tab, set that skill to "+" and the other one to "-". You will never need to use the skill that you're not specialized in, get all your points out of it. The third skill "Artificing" leave at "+". You will only ever need your specialized skill and Artificing. (More to follow)
  6. The -38 is a bug. You actually have no extra skill points to spend. When you go up a level it SHOULD add +24 to that space, and then count down to zero and disappear. When it bugs out, it stays at zero when you level, and when you apply your skill points, it starts counting down into negative numbers. You should be able to re-set this by logging out and back in. If it stays.. I'm sorry, no idea what else to do to fix it. However, to verify that this is indeed the bug. Remove all your crafting gear, and count how many points you have in your tool+utility+station skills. If it adds up to less than 24* your crafting level, you have more to spend. If it equals 24* your crafting level, then you have no more to spend. To answer your specific question - "But why lock a skill from going up?" You unlock different actions during your crafting at certain skill levels. Not all Actions are equal. Some are MUCH MUCH better than others. When you manipulate your skills, you can hit certain desirable actions as soon as they are available. This, in turn makes you more likely to be successful because you'll have access to those desired actions.
  7. Thank you, very, very much ! This is exactly the information I was looking for. That needs to be put in the wiki's on the page with the Tables.
(If you dont do it, I will with your permission)

Edit: I am not sure but I think I did pick Minerology to specialize in, or thats what I want atleast.
  8. Er yah... feel free to add this to whatever crafting guide you think is necessary. (I don't check the boards over the weekend.)
