Old school gamer looking for a home

Little history of myself, started MMORPG's with Everquest 1 back in 2001, and fell completely in love with that game until it started heading a different direction (Planes of Power xpack). From there, I moved to World of Warcraft (burning crusade). This wasn't no EQ, but the PVE progression was pretty damn good, and that is what hooked me. Ever since then, I haven't been immersed by any MMO. I could list the reasons why I can't get into any of them, but I am sure you are well aware their flaws.

I'm only into PVE, and the machanices of PVE have to be challenging and well put together. Most games now a days don't even require CC . I've tried Vanguard in the past, but I didn't take it seriously. I got stuck playing by myself until about level 15 and then quit. I can't stand questing, but I will do some of it if I have to do. I like to be in a skilled group, defeating mobs that I wouldn't be able to solo in 3 seconds :D. I believe Vanguard has what I am seeking, but I just need to try and immerse myself into the game...and I believe a guild is neccesary to do so with my play style.

    I'm 28 years old
Live in Florida (eastern time zone)
    Weekdays (am and pm available)
Weekends (afternoons available, work at nights)

I enjoy a social guild, doesn't have to be hardcore, but obviously active and helpful. Hope this helps.

Just leveled from 1-9, got to say I am shocked this game is low population. The huge seamless world and it's graphics alone is enough to hook me, but I am digging the gameplay as well. Of course, mindless quests is boring, but I did get a chance to go into a low level dungeon and explore. Hoping to find people to play with!

welcome to vanguard. VG is loaded with unrealized potential that suffered from an early release and being too much for PC's at the time. the bad taste was hard for many to overcome. Those of us that have stayed or returned find the immersion and the community the major reasons to stay. This is PVE with encounters beyond typical tank and spank, and with interesting classes and races. (although they really don't show their true value until after lvl 20.
Take the time to look around and talk in game, see who plays when you do and check their guild tags. if they have a recruiter on, send a /tell and talk to them.
The population here will always be low compared to the monster mmo's like EQ and WoW. but you wont find a better game to play or people to play with. Welcome to Vanguard

i agree that questing can be difficult to stand. if i have set a goal or something that has to do with my character background i find it a little easier to stand some questing i think it also helps if its in a area of the world i want to start in other than having to run to far from where the npc is to start a quest. I hope the rewards are good too i think thats what the best part of a quest should be. if you are interested in how to figure out the mechanics of how to make quests too maybe you should check out my guild and some of the stuff i worked on in the archived forums under the tooth and nail roleplaying forums. and i hope you have fun in the immersive world of telon.

All questing does is make the game linear, which is what I cannot stand in any MMO..IMO, quests should be few and far between, in which they follow the lore (killing a head mob of a dungeon, doing something for faction, etc). Leveling should never revolve around questing because then you cannot join someone else in adventuring if they are behind or ahead of you in the quest system (back to being linear). Anyway, enough of that rant..

I'll check out your posts and see what they are all about. I am all for anything that'll help immerse myself. I convinced a friend to join me in Telon, so I just have to catch him up and then we'll be out exploring this huge world. What I like about this game is that I am not in any rush to get to level 55, in fact I want to take it slow and explore the world and all of it's dungeons (this is what questing makes people forget to do, everything is a damn rush to end game). Time to sit back and enjoy. :D

one of the pleasant surprises in Vanguard is that quests do not make the game linear. There are quests on all continents. although there are some chain quests,. not doing them does not prevent you from doing other quests elsewhere. There are a few long quest lines that result in excellent rewards that make them worth doing, but otherwise they are usually xp on top of the kills, and some smaller reward. Don't be afraid of quest shields. also, one quest line in particular, the lore stone quest usually done at 40+ but can be started at any level will take you to 48 different locations in the game, some dungeons, some overland, with the end result being passive buffs and a lot of exploration.

Ah yes, quests like you mentioned "the lore stone" is how questing should be done. I will be looking forward to that, but until then I am kill scorporians and gnolls till my eyes bleed :p

yes have been pretty linear in my experiences but the most fun was when i was starting out in my hometown halgarad and just grouping up with people to see what i could get done with a group instead of bymyself and i found a 2handed axe and taht was very exciting stuff. well everyone else in the group was doing their "quests" but i got that item so it felt like a quest to me too. i guess to me some items still have the same nostalgia. i would like to see more places where people go to kill scorpions etc like you said wencer just hope they drop some good loot and if people were to give me good loot without having to get it myself i believe it would be like doing a quest or something

As a roleplaying member of Vanguard and a role-play guild leader, I find the quests that lend to the lore of the lands incredibly interesting. I think that one would be hard pressed to find players who enjoy the kill 10 of these then go kill 20 more kind of quests, but in those quest there is also quest items that drop and can trigger other quests. I started playing EQ in 99 and remained until 06, when I came here. I have been here since 06 and although Telon has been my home, I have played a great number of other games along the way including beta testing a good number of games. None of them have afforded me what Vanguard has. As Leav points out:

If I can be of any assistance at all in helping you and your friend get acclimated in Telon, please do give me a shout, or any of my folks (The Preferiti) at any time as they can find me if you wish or help as well.

    All the best.

Welcome to Vanguard Wencer. I played EQ1 up through the expansion Dragons of Norath. Omens of War, (previous one), was one of my all time favorite expansions and zones. You missed out on that one in my opinion. ;)

I've always felt that VG was what EQ wanted to be when it grew up. This game's content and depth is the only one that ever rivaled EQ. But with better graphics and combat mechanisms. Enjoy the game, be sure to smell the twilight orchids along the way!

I can definitely see the potential, even at the low level I am at! Thank you for the offering help, this hospitality reminds me of the EQ community. It's been years since I've communicated with strangers that are acutally friendly,

I am sure I missed some good times in EQ, but I was so saddened by the Planes of Power xpack, it completely took me away from Norrath and I couldn't take it anymore. It was like I was forced away from the home that I loved so much. Yes, I was always told that VG is what EQ should have been, and that's pretty much why I am here. It is basically the last MMO that has any old school feel to it, and I am even more surprised a lot of old school gamers aren't playing it.. Surprisngly the graphics are even better than what is being released now, I dont get it.

I would say it becomes non-linear around 45, not that quest lines go away but, some things revolve around lucky drops (e.g. swamp armor) and some things like kdq you can start from zero and go with someone who's maxed out. It's actually a pretty good mix of content, if you don't sit in ToT flips/OT shields for the levels and then find yourself dead in the water at 55.

With the xp race/bonuses, most groups trivialize the dungeons and stuff, if the mobs are not three levels above you, it's probably going to be pretty soft. Most of it does involve quests, up to you if you want to work on it or just be there, but most of the good gear is sealed behind those multiple steps. There are a few like Hold of Intangibility (20ish) that have no quests that I am aware of, but are still fun to play and maybe find a good drop or two. I've tried to taste all of the big dungeons and on a full account, I've still missed at least two of them. Lorestone quest is the worst thing ever imo, but without getting the results you'd probably be seen as a chump. Anyway, hope you plant some roots here, there aren't any other games just glitter.
